SOCIAL MEDIA DOMINANCELet’s make our online time productive. Most people in the world today, when thinking of social media have mostly negative images in their head. The ‘Selfie’ or the notorious ‘slide into my DM’ lines and other new age vocabulary comes to people’s minds.Social Media is also known for using profanities and getting away with it, the perfect place to hide your id and your real persona. It is also the ideal place for flirting with the opposite gender, a great time waster/ killer and a place to become a keyboard warrior to vent out your frustrations regarding the world. So with all these negatives and many more. How could you possibly make use of this tool positively?Well if you think about it…Social media can actually become an extremely effective tool for the da’wah. In this blog I will briefly go through some ideas of how we can make our online time much more effective.Let me paint you a picture of the current scenario of what practising Muslims on social media are doing:Making nice posts, with emotional lines and then add a hadith.Or a picture of nice mountains/ skies. And then a general motivational caption.Upload on Instagram, on Facebook and then wait for the tonnes of likes.Perhaps many are thinking that this is the Dawah & are immensely satisfied with their efforts.Well, these are good reminders.. but have you ever noticed that this is EXACTLY WHAT EVERYONE ELSE is doing?!! I mean I don’t want to delve too much into it because This is different a topic but don’t you think it’s so easy to gain thousands of likes and followers by putting up pictures of the Kaaba or call your page “I love my nabi “? It is very easy. But the question is, is that what’s needed now? Do we need quite likers , hearts and followers or do we need productive engagement? But like I said that’s a different discussion..For now let’s see what we can do to build upon this. The sort of content that’s needed in this day and age are generally around themes such as:-Purpose of life-How people can get involved in calling to Allah.-Thought provoking content-Content that invites discussion and provokes questions/ answers. So if you’re planning to start a YouTube channel. Then try and follow this formula.⁃ Short reminders- relevant- quirky- well prepared, write down your notes ( yes pen and paper style! You’ll see the difference. Make it original. I also go for a long walk outdoors, perfect time to get your creative juices going.⁃ Man life universe, purpose of life, addictions of the current youth, talk about issues that others shy away from. Tawheed. Death, Hellfire, Jannah. If you’re on twitter, then help the Ummah to counter the anti Islamic narrative. Some will read your tweet and be made to think. For this end you need to research your subject thoroughly. For example if you’d like to get into the whole theism vs atheism debate, then brush up on your views on these subjects. Follow those engaged in active dawah on twitter to gain ideas. If you’re a heavy Instagram user, then consider live interviews with those influencers that bring value/ benefit for the Ummah. Not those who are looking for fame and followers.Again if you’re going to make posts then they have to thought provoking. Your post has to make someone who sees the post, stop them doing what they’re doing, make them put down their phone and ponder upon your post. You know those ‘ whoah’ moments.Facebook:I have from the onset back in 2011, dedicated my social media for the sake of da’wah. You will rarely see me sharing personal feelings, sadness, what meal am I eating or duck face / pout selfies.Let me tell you about my journey and insights. I manage groups and pages. I think I’ve been fairly successful in online engagement & connecting with people. Alhumdulillah. When I post, I post with these objectives:-Motivate people to engage in da’wah.-Motivate people to get involved in da’wah training. ( Muslim youth and non Muslims)⁃ Provoking thought amongst those people not upon Islam.⁃ Provoke thoughts among non Muslims.Posts- well thought and post in gaps.seek Commments!Sometimes ask if running a page: where are you from? Favourite hobbies. Get the discussion going. If you’re going to post. Post something that will create discussion or provoke deep thinking.Always try if possible to get people to come forward and give opinionsHave non practising in mind. Non practising or Non Muslims. Post with this in mind. What are the latest trends and fashions amongst the youth? Create relevant content.I would invite anyone that reads this blog ( not a shameless plug in) to actually scroll down and have a look at my posts. Yes not a huge following, but I can confidently claim that there’s constant healthy engagement on most posts. So be it any of the above social media Apps, Don’t worry about likes/ followers/ subscribers. If they come, great if not.. so what. The angels are noting down your intention and your actions.Allah says to the angels: If my servant intends a bad deed, do not record it unless he does it. If he does it, record it as one bad deed. If he leaves it for my sake, record for him one good deed. If he intends to do a good deed and he does not do it, record for him one good deed. If he does it, record for him ten good deeds like it up to seven-hundred times as much.” (Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī) Reflect upon this:Look at and count how many followers you have on Insta. On Twitter, on Tik Tok.How many friends on FB, snapchat. On WhatsApp.How many contacts on Reddit, tumblr, we chat. These are not letters or numbers on your screen! These are humans beings with beating hearts. They are bone and flesh. The warning is there, in the divine book, if these people, your contacts die upon other than Islam or Muslims who were deeply involved in sins and die and you never invited them to Allah, not interacted with them, then a terrible punishment beckons. Are you just going to share random posters or are you going to do the tedious task of sending them a private message and engaging in a conversation?Impact their hearts and minds. You could have an epic typing chat style discussion or arguments. Tire out your fingers. Get frustrated, get misunderstood and misunderstand, because that’s what letters to letters, words upon words do on a screen do. Letters and words do not have a soul or consciousness, they are made up characters on a screen. So these are interacting, but you the persons are not!For best results, try and meet, if not then video call, if not then an audio call. FB now offers FB messenger audio and video rooms. Making it easier.Twitter has DM or exch emails, then exchange mediums to have the call.YT comments, exch emails, and contact details.Instagram- DM and an option to call!It is far better to have a call, where words are heard and exchanged verbally, than letters on a screen. Let human minds interact via questions and answers in a language that both are comfortable with than reading coding pixels ( Letters and words on your screen). This is natural, avoids misunderstandings, humbled both and far more impact.Mix up your posting. For good engagement mix up your posts. Don’t just share YT link after link, a few times a day.. everyday but upload a short video now and again for better traction. Then other times Post a profound picture, with a question asking caption. Then sometimes ask a question, any question, maybe even a poll.Post with a view to comment and provoke thought.Always keep an eye on the likes, these are the people who are very shy to talk. So you to draw them-out, thank them for liking but ask them their thoughts about why they liked.Allah swt has made it so easy for us to gain quick good deeds. Centuries ago, our ancestors had to travel in the heat, in the sweat and physically demanding conditions to call people to Allah swt.. and all we need to do is sit in front of a screen, and use our fingers from the comforts of our beds and home. Ajeeb!Finally..People are waiting for you to initiate the chat! People are waiting online to be contacted. This is the mindset you should have whilst online. Allah swt is waiting for you to reward you, just take that step. But also remember. Social media could be double edged sword. If your intention is not on point. If your intention is not doing all this social media Dawah activism for the sake of Allah swt alone, to gain good deeds, then it could become destructive for your nafs. Be careful of the online Fitna that comes with being active. Do not get obsessed with a little thump emoticon or a red square button with the word ‘subscribed’ on it. Don’t get swept away by the followers and subscribers, because this may become a source of destruction. We need to more and more people to become dawah activists and da’wah ‘popularisers’ . There’s many online who promoting charity work, social justice, promoting courses or organisations. That’s all very well & good, but what about the da’wah? Da’wah to Non Muslims and the non practising people. There’s a lot of nastiness, filth, and time wasting going on, online. Be they silly celebrity following or arguing over useless news. Let’s counter this narrative!I pray that after reading this blog, you are now motivated to bring more Dawah related content on your social media and there core gain much more Barakah. Through this divine barakah, you’ll Insha’Allah dominate the social media scene.

“Without involvement, there is no commitment. Mark it down, asterisk it, circle it, underline it.” – Stephen CoveyA post goes out on social media..Does anyone want to volunteer with us? Join us? Be part of the team? And then countless people will comment or inbox the advertiser: “Me! ✋✋✋✋✋…”This seems to have been the norm for a few years now. It could be a DAWAH org, a charity or any online project. Subsequently what then tends to happen is, tonnes of people will put themselves forward without any thought about:How many hours/ days can they truly give to this? What are the other 100 orgs you have signed up for? Are you up to date with the their work? Are you able to do it? Do you have the skills? The issue is that people rarely think about the above issues. They are driven more by enthusiasm and haven’t really given it deep thought. It’s either non thought out enthusiasm or insincerity. I say insincerity as I have noticed people volunteer just because they are bored of their current projects or maybe everyone else joining this new initiative or even… in this new project “ I’ll get a chance to speak and show the world my amazing talents!”These are very weak foundations before commiting to a project. The foremost and only reason should be for the pleasure of Allah and changing the world. Anything else, career advancement, promoting your own content should come as a bonus. This is the foundation which will carry you and make you commit to a particular project.Commitment in da’wah:Some context. At Dawah Motivation, which has been providing an online platform for training and networking, we have had many members joining us. Although at first they have lots of enthusiasm to be ‘active’ members of the group (WhatsApp/Facebook) this enthusiasm usually withers away within weeks of joining. We’ve always advocated that look upon DM as a test of your general life commitment. If you commit to this group and some of its very basic requirements, you’ll be able to commit to anything in life! Be it marriage, studies, career or family! But that hasn’t been happening. Commitment to tasks has been weakening over time. I have noticed this same trend amongst other groups and organisations.Joining a group is easy. But Being committed to it and playing an active role is sometime a lot of us are missing out on.So maybe some of the tips below could help you gain much more commitment to the cause. Be it Dawah/ charity or a knowledge based project. Why am I talking about commitment?I am extremely grateful to my Lord, the most loving, that he placed within my heart an old school type of loyalty. Whatever project or industry i embark upon, i take as something personal. I own it and am passionate about it. I don’t commit half heartedly. For me its sometimes a matter of life and death. These thoughts and this particular mindset has helped me to commit to projects over the years be it at IERA, YC, writing blogs ( 9 years now) producing videos ( 7 years ) sticking to the dawah and Islam. Alhumdulillah.I share this not to gain any praise or to let it be known that i am special but to inspire you, the reader. That a human being living in the 21st century, with all the gadgets that our world can offer and all the insincere, fickle personalities around us and all the distractions, can still hold on to these antique character traits such as loyalty and commitment to a cause. Some tips to improve commitment to a project. You need to have several motivational reasons not just one. One reason in this day and age is not enough. You may add this to your reminder App on your device or print out large copies and put on your room wall. To serve you as a reminder. Then keep referring back to these every time you begin to slip. Before joining a project or volunteering think to yourself that I will give it my all to this project for 3/4 months, full intensity, day and night! If you give it all, you’ll see whether or not you’ll like it. If you are losing motivation to this task, then be brave, be honest & speak to the head. Call them and explain. It’s better that you are honest than keep giving fake promises: Eg Some personal problems right now, or exams or getting married etc! Just be honest and say you need a few months off or away.Do not keep raising your hands or put yourself for every project that comes up. Stick to one or maximum two. If you keep becoming a ‘core member’ of every organisation then there will be clashes. Then you won’t be able to commit to any of these! They suffer and you suffer. So be very careful before putting your hand up and ask yourself deeply, can I handle all these? Or am I capable of just one?Think about your reputation, if you keep jumping from one to another, then future employers will notice this. Additionally, people will think about you as the one who doesn’t stick to one project, always keeps changing their minds. They’ll think you are unreliable. You don’t want to create this reputation about yourself. Before signing up to a project, an institute, organisation or a task, view and treat this as you would your paid job. A Paid job or even your university. At the work place or at an institute setting, there are rules. There are strict timings and repercussions if they are not adhered to. So the fear of losing an income or being expelled from your institute makes you commit and take it all very seriously. This is how you should treat dawah projects or any Islamic course that you’ve signed up for. Treat it as seriously as your career, that will push you to commit harder.Give it everything, give it your heart! Lose some sleep, sacrifice an hour or even half an hour of sleep. Old school die hard loyalty and fiery passion is needed. Don’t give it your half, give it your life! Make it your life’s purpose!Own it! Don’t treat yourself as a mere member, but look upon a project as if you founded it. Think that if i weaken my commitment, then this project will fail. Think how many people this will let down, think about our reputation. What then will you think about yourself? On the authority of Abu ‘Amr, who said:I said: “O Messenger of Allah, tell me something about Islam which I could not ask anyone about save you.” He answered: “Say: ‘I believe in Allah’, and then stand firm and steadfast.”[Muslim]Let this following Ayah be enough to make us more committed:“And keep the covenant. Lo! of the covenant it will be asked.”– Al-Israa’ 17:34

Never ignore a person who cares for you. Because someday you’ll realize you’ve lost a diamond, while you were busy collecting stones….I have been connecting people, creating small groups way before we became accustomed to the internet world. So naturally with the advent of the online experience , I transferred my skills and experience onto WhatsApp. Near enough the whole world is using WhatsApp now and all sorts of groups are being formed. In regards to the da’wah, one of the most challenging aspects of this is to keep the group active and lively. Below are some ideas that may help, although I am sure there are many other tips that have gone amiss, so in the comments do add your tip and we may even edit this blog to accommodate your suggestions.WhatsApp groups! The Beginning“I’ll add you to the group” or “Can I join your WhatsApp group “Are some of the opening typical enquiries that I have been receiving over the years. This is the easy part. You either send a link or as an admin you add them directly ( with or without their permission!)Initiating a WhatsApp group and then adding members is easy. But maintaining the group and making it productive has become a challenge. WhatsApp Groups: For both Members & AdminsAdab applies? Imagine you walk into a room, you say Assalaam Alaykum all! and then you ask a question. Everyone then ignores you. Or perhaps only two replies, would you not want the others to at least acknowledge your existence?? How would you feel about not getting a reply ? What would you think? The above scenario should be kept in mind and we need to treat the WhatsApp group like this. As if it’s happening physically and everyone is in the same room. You may see a telephone number on the screen but it’s actually a human being behind these digits. So be considerate & think how they would feel. This may spur you on to always make a significant effort in replying and not become a silent dormant observer.Too many groups? Choose carefully. More is not productive. Yes enthusiasm is a commendable virtue but not at the expense towards reality, your time and resources. You will be limited in committing your time and energy to multiple groups.Self ReminderMake a poster, a large one. Add in what groups you’re in, stick this poster on the bedroom wall or somewhere visible, and check it daily. Interact in GroupEven if you don’t have an input into a discussion, at least 2 or 3 times a week, reply with a “Jzk khayr”. ( takes three seconds of your life!)Or even type the word ‘following’ or even “I am not sure how to answer this” But don’t ignore it, never ignore the chat & move on, do not leave before saying something.Own itTry to be informal as possible. Look upon this group as if you own it! Don’t worry about decorum or what others would think. Don’t spam, but ask as many questions as you can.Get to know as many members as you can. The ones that you have ‘clicked’ with, have a call now and again and encourage each other to become an active member. Why is calling important? Before AddingBefore starting the group or if you’ve recently become the main head, have a call with each member first before adding/ starting the group. Tedious, I know but this critical induction will keep you in good stead in the near future. In the induction insist upon active participation rather than becoming a silent observer. Welcome peopleWhen adding, welcome the new member, ask them for a detailed intro ( not just studies) and then ask current members to give a brief intro again ( yes you have to keep repeating, so maybe copy paste from a note already made for this). This way it is much more interesting & people will see commonalities eg “oh same city as me, or I’m studying that too. “Encourage Productive DiscussionsGetting responses. Very tough, because there’s too many groups and not enough time. So it’s like a social media competition, competing for attention. Try the video calls option. More TipsInstead of typing out a question or initiating a new task or even just to keep the group ‘chatty’ Try making a short video just to say hey! Try voice notes. Try making a small poster. Take a pic with a small caption. Don’t always demand updates but ask a random Q e.g. what would you put in your sandwich? Memes? Tag different people, not the same one. Reply there and then if possible. If you think I’ll reply later, then more often than not, that later won’t come!Use of different emoticons. Stickers. Don’t forget the description option. Pin a doc of rules? Announcement of Next event online or a face to face meet up.Change the display picture now and again, something to catch the eye of the members. The group displays pictures, making them bright & shiny. Again, think from the point of view of the member. When they scroll down their WhatsApp chats, they may see your group as the one that catches their attention.Find out the optimized time when people sit down to check their messages on their phone. Post your question or link at that opportune moment, as opposed when everyone would be asleep. Use the Reminder option on your smartphone. A simple “check fulan WhatsApp group” today and reply. Further tips: Inactive MembersAlways chase up dormant members. Scroll up for a few months and check that a certain person has been completely silent for months upon months. Tag them, if still no reply, PM them. If still no reply, then have a call. Sometimes you have to be ‘harsh’. What this means is that the greater good of the group/ project is much more important than the feelings of a member. Members will rarely say “ I cannot commit/ I need to leave”. So you have to be Frank ( with compassion) and ask whether they want to take a break for a while or leave altogether. This is because if you allow one dormant member for a long period of time then this allows others to think they could do the same. If after exhausting all avenues a certain member hasn’t improved their interaction, then it is better to remove them rather than they ‘left’. This is to create a good standard and an example to others who are watching all this unfold. Teamwork makes the Dream WorkRecruit other group admins, share the burden Assign tasks to certain members. Especially the chatty ones and the ones that use whatsapp regularly. For example member X has to post a meme every few days.Another member has to post a short motivating video and ask for people’s thoughts once a week. This keeps the group lively & active. Team work makes the dream work, The WhatsApp group team is the team! MeetupsNow and again, a zoom / google hangout/ Skype group call helps. Once every two months or something. In this, that human touch is helpful and motivating. You can also remind everyone to keep replying and be an active member and not just a silent observer. Outcomes: Lack of Follow-upBoth as an admin and as a member, remember this. If everyone only observes & doesn’t say anything for days and weeks subsequently the group will slowly go quite. When it goes quiet, demotivation sets in. When that happens, people may leave the group and suddenly the whole project dies! That’s quite tragic. Just because of a lack of replying and discussion, what could have been a world changing project, has to end in such a way. Since we established the Team DM group in 2017. It has been constantly active. Yes it is tedious typing and checking, but think about this: If you keep your group active, then in a few years you could influence many people. InspirationThe following divine principles will help us maintain our groups. As members & as Admins: And when you are greeted with a greeting, greet [in return] with one better than it or [at least] return it [in a like manner]. Indeed, Allah is ever, over all things, an Accountant.— Quran 4:86Remember this ayah constantly, this may encourage you to reply more and be less silent.“Faithful believers are to each other as the bricks of a wall, supporting and reinforcing each other. So saying, the Prophet Muhammad clasped his hands by interlocking his fingers.” (Al-Bukhari)“It is not lawful for the Muslim to desert his brother for more than three; they meet, so this one turns away and the other turns away, and the better one of the two is the one who greets the other first.” [Al-Bukhaari and Muslim]ConclusionThese were some ideas that may help. There are many other tips that I missed, so in the comments do add your tip and we may edit this blog to accommodate your ideas.P.s Do add your own tips for making a group active, the DM website editorial will edit and keep on adding your points, giving credits to you!

A young brother asked me a question in regards to how he can maintain his family commitments & be involved in Da'wah projects. He also hinted that his family are opposed to his involvement, mainly due to the age old fears of 'disruptive to studies'. In this short blog, I will attempt to give some advice and pointers in answering his query & in turn this may prove useful to other people in the same situation. I like to answer in points or bullet points. The reason for this is that the emphasis is on practical real life tips as opposed to some deep theory. If your family is opposed to your Da'wah, then this could be due to a number of reasons. They are not clear about the organisation you are with. They don't understand its aim. It could be that perhaps you have neglected your family & studies and placed priority for Da'wah. You may have started off in an argument, instead of winning them over. Parents naturally will always be overprotective and cautious about whom their child will associate with. So them asking questions, ESPECIALLY if you kept it quiet from the beginning and they had to discover later on that you've been very active without their knowledge is their natural right. It should be expected! So really ,unless you are hanging around notorious extremists, they shouldn't be opposed at all. So from the get go, tell them Exactly what this particular organisation does, how it helps you as a human being. How it could actually help you academically as well as spiritually and of course, help you become an even more obedient child! (Yes, the parents love this one!!)Invite them to as many events and gatherings where possible. They need to see who their child is meeting up with. They need sureties. So think of unique ways of inviting or taking them to regular events. Additionally invite other members to your residence. Have lunch with the CEO of the organisation & your dad! Now that the CEO or member of your organisation is in the castle of the king (the king being your dad), your parents can now 'interrogate ' your fellow members/ CEO to their hearts content! These face to face interactions will go a long way towards alleviating all types of suspicions and provide assurances to your family. Remember, if all your parents saw were random names on a poster or a voice on your phone or a name on social media, then the suspicions & doubts won't vanquish until there is a face to face real meeting.Da'wah projects should actually help you become a better Daii and a better child at home. The worst thing you can do is isolate yourself in your bedroom whilst the family gather downstairs watching TV. Even though you may be praying or reading a book or engaging in an online Da'wah discussion, your family don't know that! All they are thinking is that you have abandoned the family & are trying to keep away. No! Unacceptable! As a budding Daii, you should be even more involved with tedious family gatherings. You should mix even more, no matter how secular or liberal your family members are. Unless they ask you to commit open kufr or engage In a major sin, I would opine.. sit with them & watch the boring Pakistani drama's or dinner invitations where you'll see a lot of non bearded & non hijab personnel. But with warmth & wisdom, analyse the drama or the dinner invite afterwards, discuss its positives and negatives & in a subtle manner discuss how Islam provides an alternative lifestyle which can also be fun & entertaining. If you have recently begun practising & are the only one in your family, then work on your brothers and sisters. Get them 'on your side'. This will act as a great motivation for the rest of the family to follow suit.Don't ever argue with your parents. Avoid all confrontations at all cost! You have to show superhuman patience & be annoyingly at peace and under no circumstance raise your voice. No matter how much they insult you, the Da'wah, your fellow members, no matter how many sarcastic remarks they'll make about Muslims & 'maulvis', no matter how many jibes, how angry they get or mock, you.. the budding Daii, has to sail this storm of abuse. The moment you feel an an inkling of anger, you have lost the 'battle'. This is your test. If you can overcome this with fortitude then your family will eventually respect and maybe even, God willing, join you!Your studies, instead of seeing a decline in marks, should actually increase! If you're with an organisation that is always pushing leadership qualities, being productive , hard work etc then this should be exemplified within your own studies. If you are a student at university then I would advise placing priority over studies for now. As a temporary phase. You graduating with flying colours will actually help the Da'wah in the future! Today's Ummah needs highly educated and academic duaat. So aim to become one. This doesn't mean keep away from the brothers for months on end. It just means that term time, you'll meet once a week for an hour. And then during holidays attend and help out more. Do make it a point to explain to your parents that you are spending so many hours a week on studies and just a mere hour with the Da'wah. This will assure them that you also have a passion for studies too.Always explain to your family that this organisation ( YC or Qmar or Ulearna or similar ) actually have highly qualified people. It's not a typical backward organisation which just rants all day & wants to cause destruction. It actually promotes leadership qualities, ambition, vision & achieving the best! Show them this side of the org and perhaps the Quran & sunnah side of things could take a backseat.. for now. Eventually after being impressed they will then appreciate the Qur'anic teachings & the sunnah. Otherwise because of the media today & world events, the moment you mention Quran, sunnah, daleel! Evidence, bidah! And so on, they'll conjure up images of negativity. It would take time to change their mindset towards our noble sources of knowledge. In conclusion. When someone becomes practising and changes their life style from one of sin to obedience to the creator and then involves themselves with Da'wah orgs and attends events, then your family & especially your parents shall notice this change. They've watched you grow from a baby into adulthood, after Allah swt, they know you more than anyone else. Naturally change in you will always come in the guise of skepticism. They'll think all sorts of questions including 'is this a phase'? Etc. So them opposing you should be welcomed as your first test in a life of Da'wah work. If you didn't start off well & argued from the get go, then have a rethink and a change of 'strategy'. All parents eventually will come round by the will of Allah swt, but there may be that hesitancy in the beginning.Hope the above helps. There are I'm sure many other points to. Do leave questions or comments & I will try and address them.Jazak'Allah Khayr.
